My girlfriend is pregnant and is looking for good maternity insurance. Any advice on a good one?

She has a group plan, but missed the open enrollment date, and it won't take effect until May. I work for a construction company that doesn't offer insurance so that is not an option. She makes too much money for Medicaid, but between us we don't make enough to cover the expenses of being pregnant. We have talked to the Dr. and the hospital to get the expenses lowered, but are still worried about paying the costs. My girlfriend is pregnant and is looking for good maternity insurance. Any advice on a good one?
Almost every insurance will not cover a pre-excisting condition - pregnancy would fall under that standard. Are you sure she makes to much for medicaid. Pregnant women fall under a different standard you know. Have her file for it anyway.

Both me and my husband work we make almost 40,000 together and i qualified. It can't hurt to find out.My girlfriend is pregnant and is looking for good maternity insurance. Any advice on a good one?
It is going to be rather difficult for her to get private insurance during her pregnancy, as that private insurance can consider pregnancy a pre-existing condition.

Have her apply for Medicaid anyways, the payscale is greater than you may think. Pregnancy Medicaid is different than regular Medicaid. She may have to go to a clinic for prenatal care.

When enrollment comes back up, her group insurance CAN NOT deny her coverage because she is pregnant (if the normally cover prenatal care). It is against Federal law for group insurance to consider pregnancy pre-existing.
Get some pregnancy magazines, there are tons of ads for insurance for pregnant women.

EDIT- Reading these other responses, how much does this suck?!?! So her insurance wont kick in until May, she makes too much to get medicaid, so her options are affordable care at the health department or pay cash at a dr????That's ridiculous!!!

What about planned parenthood? They offer discounted prenatel care, i'd consider it a step up from the health department.

For the delivery, my hospital offered discounted cash options for delivery and everyone will allow you to make a payment plan. If I remember correctly, vaginal birth no complications was around $2500, with complications was around $3500 and c-section was $5500. That doesn't include dr's fees or drugs, the drugs they'll want you to pay cash for.

An idea... how much does she like her job? If she leaves her job, she'd qualify right?

oh and some personl experiance, i was pregnant before i was eligible for my group plan, i only had to wait 1 month, but then they covered everything...
You can go to your Department of health, but you have to have a rejection letter from Medicaid. Apply for it anyway, it should take between 3-7 weeks to get the letter after you fill out the application. They will offer you free or discounted care at the health department. They will also help you find a program to lower the costs of the delievery stay. This is often the only other option if you are un-able to get Medicaid.
It is too late. You cannot pick up private insurance that will cover the pregnancy here in the states. In fact, most private insurance policies require a pregnancy rider that must be in place for some time before conception, often a year.

The only option if for your gf to find another job that has insurance benifits. Starting the new job will allow her to enroll, and many employer insurance plans will pick up a pregnancy right away.

Other than that, it's medicaid and visa/mastercard/amex/discovery!

Good luck.
United Health Care! (they WILL cover Pregnancy as a pre-exisiting condition!!!!) They were SUPER great for my entire pregnancy. You should definitely look into their insurance costs, because no matter what, they were very helpful. They offered 100% coverage on all of my doctor's visits and they also had a ';Healthy Mothers'; program where they would call in to check on you and answer your questions 24hrs a day with real nurses. (It was a free service offered just for having the insurance.) They also reimbursed me for a Medela breast pump (which is top of the line) and they sent me free stuff in the mail quite often.
I work for a INSURANCE company.. It is too late to enroll into a policy if you are wanting the insurance to pay it will not! DO NOT be fooled by them telling you it will because most cases they DON'T! You can try %26amp; apply for a discount program it will help in you receiving a SAVING but no payment will be done toward the hospital!

blue cross
I'm pretty sure no insurance company is going to cover it. Pregnancy is a preexisting condition. The only insurance company I found that covered an individual including maternity (not already pregnant though) was Kaiser Permanente. Blue Cross only covers maternity when you are signed up for a family plan, which is extremely expensive. I'm not 100% sure what you should do, but it might be cheaper to go to a local health department for the regular check ups and tests through the pregnancy, and see if there is a hospital that takes walk ins no insurance. The hospital in Atlanta, Grady, is like that. They have to take you. Then you just have to set up a payment plan. Otherwise, you may just have to set up something with the hospital you already plan to go to, and do the best you can paying for all the doctors visits out of pocket. Before I tried to get pregnant, I had a terrible time trying to figure out the insurance thing. The health insurance situation in this country is a mess. The predicament so many women are put in, especially your type of situation, should not even be a problem. Your wife should be getting the same treatment for her and her child as someone who is able to pay $700 a month to Blue Cross. All I can really suggest is looking in the yellow pages under insurance, and find a health insurance broker. Call a few, and see what they say. Good luck!
