I am a swimming instructor and need advice in regards to the teaching of adults.?

One of my adult students has a fear of deep water, even in you're average backyard pool. Does anybody have any suggestions on what exercises I can preform to eliminate her fear and give her confidence in herself?I am a swimming instructor and need advice in regards to the teaching of adults.?
I learnt to swim as an adult and, when I was taught to swim, my teacher got us to stand in the sahllow end of the pool and bend down at the waist and pick up a rubber brick from the bottom of the pool. This got us used to opening our eyes under water. The brick was gradually moved into deeper water and we repeated the exercise. When we got to between waist and chest height, we suddenly discovered that we couldn't just bend down and pick up the brick: we had to swim down for it. Then he told us that this showed that the water was holding us up near the surface and that we had to force our way under the surface: if we relaxed, we would come close to the surface and a gentle pull with our arms and kick with our feet would put our heads above water. That helped our confidence enormously and might work for your pupil too.

Good luck! I am a swimming instructor and need advice in regards to the teaching of adults.?
I have experience in teaching adults and I have learned that systematic desensitization is effective. I suggest that you teach her/him in shallow parts first like floating and streamlining and freestyle. Give them something fun to do like getting coins underwater and using kick boards to increase their confidence then gradually lead them deeper parts. It will not be achieved in one session but patience would ensure a favorable outcome. Hope this could help you.
Just try progressively take them out deeper and deeper each lesson. Most people with a fear of deep water is because they cant see or feel the bottom of the swimming pool. So try and give them something they can touch the bottom with like a long stick so they know its there but there feet arnt touching it
