I have a 4 acre plot on a hillside with the interstate down below approx. 1/8 mile from my home any ideas to reduce noise with plants and or fences I would greatly appreciate.I am trying to lower noise from the interstate on the back of my property, any advice on types of plants/brush
I don't know what kind of bush to get,but I would recommend getting some new windows. I don't really think any kind of shrubbery will help the noise problem. Good Luck though!I am trying to lower noise from the interstate on the back of my property, any advice on types of plants/brush
If you get arborvitaes and plant them in a row - they will grow fairly high and will cut down tremendously on the noise. I have some that are 15' behind my house and I hear nothing.
You have a few choices depending on what you hope to achieve, money, pros and cons. I would go with a thick, natural hedge, something that will obtain a height of 4 - 6 feet, then evenly spaced ';dense'; trees. A solid wall (such as stone) will provide optimum noise reduction but is both expensive and cuts down on air flow. A wooden fence is another option, but also decreases breeze / air flow, needs to be maintained and periodic replacement. Ultimately you must choose between cost, appeal, maintenance and effectiveness.
New windows will help a lot! As for bushes, try some evergreens that grow tall and are dense.
My home is about 60 feet from a major interstate. I had new windows installed and that really brought down the sound level inside. A few years ago the city installed a freeway wall and that did cut down a lot of the outside noise and gave added safety in my backyard. There are tall evergreens growing in almost all of my neighbors back yards that help to defend the noise too. The evergreens also encourage birds, which is a much better sound than the traffic!
